Maybe that's where he got the idea for his hit "Cheeseburger In Paradise". He didn't demand any odd things on his rider, he just wanted a few minutes after every show to collect himself before getting ready to drive onto his next gig. He drove his own car to gigs, he had two cheeseburgers before, and two cheeseburgers after a show. And it wasn't an easy humility, but something that he'd learned the hard way. I did food for him at Sugarloaf, as well as at the Iron Horse, and in Boston, and the one thing that struck me, especially at Sugarloaf, where he showed up in his own car, which was far from blinged out, was how humble he was. Hubiestubert: I worked at clubs that featured Warren several times. He was an artist I respected the sh*t out of, not just because of his music, but for having courage to get out, and stay out there even when a lot of others would have just curled up in a ball somewhere. He was far from a fragile man, and he joked and laughed with the crew, and the occasional back up musician that he had, but it always had a self-effacing edge to it. He was dealing with a lot of pain long before his diagnosis. He was a pro, and while he wasn't always the most open and kind man that I've ever seen, he was grateful for his fans, and he took as much time as he could before driving on to his next gig. He was just glad to be able to play for a living, and I think that a lot of folks focus on his lyrics, and forget that he actually played pretty damn well. He had tore up a lot of folks, and he had hurt them and himself, and it really came through his music in those years, and then when he got his diagnosis, he bore it with as much dignity as possible. He came by his humility introspection hard. He wasn't snarky or brash in the years that I worked with him, and it was enough shows that I got the two burgers before and two after down pat, and when I showed up at other venues, he was often surprised, but I knew his routine and that made him happy, I think. ![]() I worked at clubs that featured Warren several times.
